Going to the movies isn’t worth it anymore

The usual gang (myself, John, Sara and Rachel) went and saw Syriana the other night. It wasn’t a bad film, though it did feel a little drawn out and, as some reviews have pointed out, convoluted. The story didn’t focus on any one person but rather jumped from character to character without really developing any one of them. But don’t go watch it if you’re patriotic: I kinda hate being an American after seeing it’s portrayal of oil companies.

What really sucked the most was the cost of going to the theater: admission for a non-matinee film (those starting after 6pm) was a whopping $8.75 per person! The price alone is enough to make me not want to go to the movies anymore. Unless it’s a film I’ve been looking forward to for some time (like Star Wars), I can just wait 4-6 months and watch it on DVD in the comfort of my own home. Home is a place where it’s never too hot or too cold; where there aren’t annoying strangers ignoring their screaming children because they’re talking on the phone; and where popcorn is dirt cheap and water costs $4.00 by the case, not by the bottle.

I’d have to agree… We’ve been doing the earlier shows on a weekend afternoon to save a couple bucks. It’s outrageous. You’d think now that there’s commercials mixed with trailers, they wouldn’t have to have higher prices.
