San Diego: The Weekend Trip

John and I left Milwaukee bright and early Sunday morning on our short connecting flight to Minneapolis. Our itinerary stated we had about 45 minutes from touchdown until our next flight departed. No biggie, right? Wrong. About half of the way through our flight, our captain informed us that we were in a holding pattern over Eau Claire, Wisconsin and our landing would be delayed.

After much swearing and nervous anticipation, we finally got on the ground and hauled serious ass from one terminal to another. And trust me, while watching a slightly over-weight Puertorican and asthmatic white guy running through a really big airport must have been hilarious to those around us, we were ready to pass out once we got on the plane.

Due to some nasty weather, our outgoing flight was delayed a bit to allow other poor souls time to catch the plane due to their incoming flights being delayed as well. And then we end up waiting another hour while our plane sits in line to get de-iced before takeoff! But eventually we got under way, and the scenery was incredible. I’d never been west of the Mississippi before, so I finally got to see the Rocky Mountains and Grand Canyon.

Once we got there and after checking in to the hotel, it was time to hit up the local bars. John took me to the Gaslamp Quarter of downtown where we boozed it up at Dublin Square (an Irish pub with very attractive female bartenders) and had dinner at Rockin’ Baja Lobster (where the lobster and shrimp quesedilla was — I kid you not — a foot long).

We spent the next two days looking at apartments all over the city, from Mission Trails in San Carlos to Torrey Pines up in University City and everything in between. We drove from our hotel in Poway to Mission Valley at least two or three times each day, but it was good to get a feel for what our future commute may be like.

After three days of glorious weather, awesome food and insanely gorgeous women, it was time to come back to the frozen tundra of Wisconsin. Talk about the longest day ever: we left San Diego around noon and didn’t make it back to Milwaukee until almost 9pm local time!

I can’t wait to go back. The countdown has begun, and now it’s only a matter of time: 62 days and counting…
