Maru: In Loving Memory

Maru came into our lives on June 8th, 2005; the day before Rachel’s birthday. She’d wanted a cat again since leaving her other cat back in Louisiana and so we went to visit the Wisconsin Humane Society a few hours before going to a Brewers game. Though there were lots of kitties to choose from, Rachel fell in love with Moon and his cuddly personality.
We changed Moon’s name to Maru, and brought him home the next day. He was the best kitty ever! He loved to knead on a blue blanket we had, and would wake us up in the morning when he was hungry by rubbing his nose in our faces while we were still sleeping.
We moved in with Sara and John last Monday and brought Maru with us. He was a little scared at first and because he wasn’t used to being around other cats we mostly left him in the second bedroom. He didn’t really eat too much, but we figured it was because he was nervous.
By Wednesday we let Maru roam around the house, but he still wasn’t eating as much as he normally did. He did munch on a random houseplant and ate a dead bee, but the rest of the time he just slept under the bed.
By Sunday afternoon Maru hadn’t eaten in over 24 hours, and after throwing up twice he started crashing. Rachel came home from work and we rushed him to the Animal Emergency Center. The doctor gave him fluids to rehydrate him and we left him there to get some sleep. In the meantime, I did a little bit of research online and the doctors’ diagnosis of Wikipedia article on Feline diabetes seemed right on.
We got the call around 4am: Maru had Diabetic Ketoacidosis. We held out for a little while hoping that things would turn out for the best (as they had in someone else’s experience), but they didn’t. He was happy to see us when we go to the clinic, and decided it was best he die happy.
I’ll miss you, Maru. You were the best cat ever.

Maru you were one of the sweestest cats I have ever met. I remember first seeing you at the Humane Society and you sucked us all in with your charm and persistance….you would not keep your eyes off your soon to be owner! I will always remember your loving nature and your unique meow. You will be missed, but always remembered and loved.
