San Diego bans alcohol at all city beaches
It’s official: pending a confirmation vote from the City Council, you will no longer be able to enjoy a beer or glass of wine while watching the sunset from PB, OB or Mission Beach. You also won’t be able to have a keg at your next party in Mission Bay or Fiesta Island.
I’ll just drive up the coast, you might say. Good luck! You’ll have to find a spot in either Del Mar or Solana Beach as alcohol is already prohibited on all beaches in Imperial Beach, Coronado, La Jolla, Encinitas, Leucadia, Cardiff by the Sea, Carlsbad and Oceanside. Going even further north you’ll find alcohol bans in every community in Orange County.
I understand how local residents want to maintain a family-oriented image of the city, but I agree with everyone else who says it’s a shame a few bad apples have to ruin things for the rest of us. Personally I don’t need to have a beer with me to enjoy a day at the beach, but I don’t think the city government should be telling me I’m not allowed that choice.
The ban will most likely go into effect around the end of December (hopefully not before my birthday!) and be in place for one year. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if the number of DUIs magically goes down between now and then.
