Six. That’s how many times I’ve posted updates to this site in the last year. That’s an average of one post every two months (8-and-a-half weeks!) I update my Facebook feed about 10x more frequently. And why? Because it’s easier. Because no one really subscribes to blogs anymore. But mostly because after eight years of random musings about my life, I’ve realized that my site has become obsolete. Why struggle to come up with something worthwhile to say on your blog when you can tweet your thoughts in 160 characters or less?

I haven’t given up on my site completely, but I have installed a Wordpress plugin called StatusPress that pulls my most recent status updates from Facebook and posts them in the sidebar to the right. With all the updates Facebook has been making to their site lately there’s a chance the plugin might break in the near future but for now you can see all of my updates in one place (except for photos I upload to Facebook; that’s a whole ‘nother issue I need to tackle…).

I don’t expect anyone to care, but it’ll probably take Google a few crawls of my site to figure out that everything has moved. I figure this way I can just tell people to visit foo-jee-lah-mah-dot-com and not have to complicate things more than that.

For the last two years, I’ve been trying to make my website more compliant with Internet standards. Not only would this make my site that much cooler, but it would give me a chance to polish my design skills and bring them more up to date with the rest of the web. After all, knowing HTML is great but not if that’s the only markup language you know.

I don’t know what made me pick December 1st as the day to finally take the plunge. Maybe it’s was the unnaturally frosty chill in the air. Maybe it was the desire to make something, to be productive. In the end, it was just a solution to the horrible boredom I’ve been suffering lately. I spent a good 3 hours this morning just reading through tutorials and manuals about table-less design. Then it took another hour or so to update the code on the Photo Gallery pages, though I spent at least 15 minutes just trying to remember how the hell I made it all work; I knew I commented my code for a reason!

In the end the result isn’t any different to the average user browsing through my site. On the back-end I can finally say I’ve done away with the archaic
TABLE
tag that although worked flawlessly with older versions of my site, just isn’t dynamic enough to work with what I’m hoping to create in the future.

With all the recent hype about Web 2.0, I’m trying to brush up on my web <strike>design</strike> development skills and incorporate what I learn into this site. While I can’t say I came up with this all on my own, I’ve gone ahead and installed Lightbox into the gallery pages. Now when you click on a thumbnail, the full-size picture will display in the center of the screen on a transparent black background. It’s pretty! Now I just need a refresher course on Flash and I’ll be set.

Thanks to the Internet Archive I’ve been able to add some old posts to the site that were previously lost. If you go back to the archives from September 2002 and older, you can read just how depressing and crappy my writing was. There’s a big gap between November 2001 and June 2002 and I honestly don’t remember what I was doing during that time that stopped me from blogging other than finishing up my last semester of college.

Additionally, I’ve done some tweaking of the Photo Gallery. There’s just a few new pictures (with some old ones removed), but look for more frequent updates to this section that there have been in the past.
